Director's
Corner

For many years I have observed people being duped by con-artists
disguising themselves as preachers and faith healers proclaiming an
unbiblical gospel of health and prosperity. I am amazed how easily
intelligent people can fall for the heresy of men like Benny Hinn.
Over the years I have watched them rise and fall.
Most recently, the controversial Todd Bentley of Fresh Fire Ministries
has come under a different kind of "fire". Bentley, who has become
quite famous and financially well off due to the well publicized revival
in Lakeland, Florida, has agreed "to refrain from all public ministry
for a season to receive counsel in his personal life". He is
reported to have had "an unhealthy relationship" with a female staff
member. Bentley is known for his multiple body piercings and
tattoos, as well as his violent healing techniques and "holy laughter".
Recently, leaders within the charismatic movement have begun to
scrutinize and criticize Bentley. J. Lee Grady, editor of the
leading charismatic magazine Charisma, has reported on Bentley's moral
and theological shortcomings. Grady scolded many charismatic
leaders for endorsing Bentley and thrusting him into the spotlight
prematurely.
Charisma publisher, Stephen Strang, is also critical of Bentley and his
supporters saying, "they should have seen it coming". Strang
denounced Bentley saying his ministry "was not of God".
Now before you conclude that my article is a slam on charismatics, think
again. My concern is for Baptists. Why? Because many
of the people who are being misled by those like Bentley and Hinn are
members of Baptist churches. Pay close attention to this statement
by Mr. Grady. He said, "many of us would rather watch a noisy
demonstration of miracles, signs and wonders than have a quiet Bible
study". Grady went on to say, "we are faced today with the sad
reality that our untempered zeal is a sign of immaturity. Our
adolescent craving for the wild and crazy makes us do stupid things.
It's way past time for us to grow up".
Mr. Grady was speaking to charismatics. But, the truth of his
comments apply just as appropriately to Baptists!
I often hear people complain that there is no life in their church.
Unfortunately, that is sometimes true. However, a frenzy of
activity doesn't guarantee real life either. Cut the head
off a snake and it will suddenly seem more alive than ever (for a
while). But that snake is DEAD!

JUST A THOUGHT
. . .
"We're spiritually hungry. . . which is a good thing. But
sometimes hungry people will eat anything".

Imagine a great movement of God's Spirit throughout our nation so
powerful that millions are saved, the saved are revived, and our nation
embraces godly, biblical values! Everything would change.
What will such a vision require?

God says: "If . . . my
people who are called by My name humble themselves, pray and seek My
face, and turn from their evil ways, then I will hear from heaven,
forgive their sin, and heal their land." 2 Chronicles
7:13-14
The Ethics & Religious Liberty
Commission invites you to be a part of a growing 7:14 movement across
this nation by joining with thousands of fellow believers in a 40 day
prayer vigil for spiritual revival and national renewal.
The Ethics & Religious Liberty
Commission and the North American Mission Board have partnered together
to provide an opportunity for Southern Baptists to meet God's conditions
for spiritual revival and national renewal. The 40/40 Prayer Vigil
consists of 40 days of prayer from September 24 to November 2, 2008,
culminating in 40 hours of around-the-clock intercession during the last
three days of the Vigil.
The 40/40 Prayer Vigil is about God's
people becoming serious about being God's people - in their personal and
public lives. We desire to see a great spiritual revival so
powerful that God's people are reinvigorated and their faith compels
them to a renewed commitment to evangelism and to engage the culture.
You may sign up by clicking on the
40/40 Prayer Vigil clip art above. Please encourage your friends
and church family to do the same. As the 40/40 Prayer vigil
approaches, you will find at the website a Prayer Guide, a Blog, and a
place to be regularly updated with news about the Vigil.
We pray that God will do a great work
in and through each of us as we meet Him during this crucial time of
prayer for God's people and our nation.

Dr. Richard Land
